Ravi Shastri summoned by Enforcement Directorate over links Lalit Modi
Ravi Shastri summoned by Enforcement Directorate over links with former IPL chief Lalit Modi - Former cricketer Ravi Shastri has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in the IPL controversy case involving former commissioner Lalit Modi and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Senior Enforcement Directorate officials said that summons were faxed to the former Indian captain asking him to appear before it next week.
Enforcement Directorate sources said apart from Shastri, former Indian captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar were part of the eight-member governing council headed by ousted IPL chairman Modi. It was this governing council which took all key decisions of the first three editions of the IPL series. Sources said that the three former cricketers received Rs 1 crore each annually for their services.
The ED has been studying the IPL and its parent body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, for alleged violations of foreign exchange rules. The source of funds for the IPL and some of its teams are being investigated. A parliamentary committee headed by BJP leader Yashwant Sinha had also, earlier this year, questioned Shastri and several senior members of the BCCI.

Karnataka CM B. S. Yeddyurappa named in Illegal Mining Report
Karnataka CM B. S. Yeddyurappa named in Illegal Mining Report: Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh N Hegde - mining barons Reddy brothers, Janata Dal(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy and Congress MP Anil Lad are involved in one way or another in illegal mining, Lokayukta (ombudsman) N Santosh Hegde said Thursday.
Santosh Hegde, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, admitted that his report, yet to be submitted to the government, was leaked late Wednesday and apologised for the lapse.
Hegde, whose five-year term expires Aug 2, became emotional at the early morning press meet over the leak.
The report blames Yeddyurappa for not taking steps to check illegal mining even after the Lokayukta submitted a report on it in December 2008.
The chief minister's sons and son-in-law are said to be involved as well.
Besides the Reddy brothers, tourism minister G Janardhana and revenue minister G Karunakara, their associate, health minister B Sreeramulu, is also said to be guilty of illegal mining.
Kumaraswamy, who was chief minister in the shortlived JD-S-BJP coalition in 2006-07, has been found to have granted mining license to two companies flouting rules.
Hegde acknowledged that most of the points circulating on the basis of the leak find mention in the report.
He said the leak of the report would not lessen its importance.
Hegde said he had reason to believe that his phones had been tapped and this could have led to the leak of the report. None of his officers involved in preparing the report was responsible, he asserted.
Santosh Hegde will submit the report to the government on Friday.

Leopard Attack in Darjeeling, West Bengal - A leopard was shot dead after it attacked and injured 11 people in West Bengal's Darjeeling district on Tuesday.
The snarling adult male leopard leapt at locals and forest officials as they tried to drive it into a wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal state.
Forest official Dharma Dev Rai said villagers used knives, stones and batons to beat the big cat back.

The people are recovering from their injuries, mostly swipes from the cat's claws.
Leopards are protected in India although more are straying into villages for food.
The Times of India reported on its website that villagers needed to be made more aware of how to deal with animals that strayed out of forests. It said that, in this case, villagers had not paved a way for the leopard to return to the forest.
"We found that its four paws were injured as it had climbed on to a wall with glass shards. Afraid and desperate to return to the forest, it was attacking the bystanders," a forester told the paper.
The website added: "The forest guard further alleged that they had been forced to dart the animal due to the villagers' mounting pressure.
"If we had insisted on providing a safe passage to animals, public wrath would have fallen upon us. In such circumstances, people are in no mood to listen to us."
The website reported that leopard lynching in the tea belt of India was common.

Paraguay beat Venezuela 5-3 on penalties to reach Copa America 2011 Final
Paraguay beat Venezuela 5-3 on penalties to reach the Copa America final on Wednesday after regulation and extra-time produced a goalless draw.
Twice champions Paraguay will now meet Uruguay, chasing a record 15th title, in Sunday's final in Buenos Aires.
But the Paraguayans rode their luck as they ended the surprise run of the Venezuelans, traditional whipping boys at this level, in the cruellest of fashions with Dario Veron hitting the match-winning spot kick.
Venezuela hit the woodwork three times in their first-ever semi and had a goal ruled out questionably for offside.
Paraguay also finished with ten men, playing the final 20 minutes of the extra half-hour shorn of the red-carded Jonathan Santana for a second bookable offence.
No sooner had they started the second period of extra-time than Veron should have suffered the same fate, for headbutting Nicolas Fedor.
Inexplicably, Mexican referee Francisco Chacon dubbed the incident only worthy of yellow.
That only served to deepen the sense of injustice for the Venezuelans and tempers boiled over at the end with a mass scuffle between both team's benches to mar the occasion.
When the two sides met in the first phase a week ago they served up the match of the tournament to date with Venezuela snatching a 3-3 draw, coming from 3-1 down with two goals in the dying minutes.
This time it was a far different affair - yet the Venezuelans will wonder how they did not win long before the spot kick drama after a host of near misses with Paraguayan goalkeeper Justo Villar at times living a charmed life.
The Venezuelans were with without the suspended Tomas Rincon, sent off in the shock quarterfinal win over Chile and a key figure in their run to the last four.
Coach Cesar Farias went with Giacomo Di Giorgi and the balance of the side did not appear to be disrupted as they produced some stirring attacking play while Paraguay went with their traditional containment recipe.
Paraguay, quarterfinal conquerors of Brazil on penalties, had to leave experienced striker Roque Santa Cruz on the bench with a knee problem.
But they started as if they meant business with Nelson Haedo Valdez and Veron close for Paraguay early on, forcing Venezuelan keeper Renny Vega into action.
However, it was Venezuela who then began to dominate as Cesar Gonzalez floated over a cross from the right and an Alejandro Moreno header cannoned off the bar.
Oswaldo Vizcarrondo then headed in but had his effort chalked off for offside as Lady Luck failed to smile on the rank outsiders.
