Gold Hits All-Time High of Rs 23,620

Surpassing all previous records, gold roared to an all-time high of Rs 23,620 per 10 grams by adding 200 in the national capital today on increased buying by stockists and investors, driven by a record rally in global markets.

Silver also moved up by 500 to Rs 59,500 per kg on increased off take by industrial units and coin makers. Silver coins followed suit and jumped by Rs 1,500 to fresh high of Rs 65,500 for buying and Rs 66,500 for selling of 100 pieces.

Trading sentiment turned bullish as gold marched to a record of $ 1,624.30 an ounce by adding 1.4 per cent overseas, after US lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on raising the federal debt limit, increasing concerns of a US default and boosting demand for the metal as a safe haven.

The white metal also gained 1.5 per cent to $ 40.74 an ounce in the global markets, the highest level since July 19. On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity shot up by Rs 200 each to fresh high of Rs 23,620 and Rs 23,500 per 10 grams, respectively.

Sovereigns followed suit and added Rs 50 to Rs 18,950 per piece of eight grams. In line with a general firming trend, silver ready rose by Rs 500 to Rs 59,500 per kg and weekly-based delivery gained Rs 805 to Rs 60,270 per kg.

Sharmila Tagore, the yesteryear actress, for the first time walked through the ramp wearing a ghagra teamed up with a long netted jacket.

The 64-year-old actress was the show's topper of designer duo Ashima and Leena on the third day of the Delhi Couture Week.

An elegant Tagore sashayed the ramp while 'Shukran Allah', the soulful number from son Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Kurban', played in the background.

"I had never worn this kind of dress. But Ashima and Leena have convinced me to wear it and I feel I can wear it now and then.

Woman DSP Caught Accepting 1 Lakh Bribe

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohali, Raka Gira arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) on charges of demanding and accepting bribe worth Rs 1 lakh from a builder for settling his case on Sunday.

CBI also carried out search and seizure operations at Gira’s palatial 2-kanal house in Sector 15 of Chandigarh.

The agency laid a trap after a Mullanpur-based builder K K Malhotra filed a complaint against Gira and arrested her after they found the marked currency at her residence.

CBI has registered a case against Gira on charges of demanding and accepting illegal gratification and booked her under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The search yielded around Rs 1.2 crore in cash, stashed in various boxes in different parts of the house and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. Also, the CBI found fixed deposits worth Rs 75 lakh and other expensive artefacts.

Supreme Court Decides to Watch Police Action at Baba Ramdev's Yoga Camp

The Supreme Court of India on Monday decided it will watch the video of how Baba Ramdev's yoga camp in Delhi was broken up by the Delhi Police. The apex court, while hearing a petition filed by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, said, “ We need to ensure that such cases, in which innocent citizens are being beaten up, should not happen again.

In his petition, the yoga guru had contended that Union Home minister P Chidambaram’s decision to use force against him and his followers was politically motivated and taken much earlier.

Supreme Court, however, refused to make Union Home Minister P Chidambaram a party in the case at this stage. The apex court had recently asked Delhi Police to explain their behaviour and the need to resort to teargas and baton-charge in the closed enclosure when people were sleeping during yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s protest gathering at the Ramlila ground in June.

An apex court bench of Justice BS Chauhan and Justice Swatantra Kumar said that there are documents and DVDs to show that the yoga exercises were undertaken at the camp, and if that was so, what was the justification for the police to resort to baton-charge.

Delhi Police chief BK Gupta, in an affidavit to the apex court, had said that permission to use the Ramlila ground was given for a yoga camp, and not for any other purpose. The court then said that it would consider Ramdev’s plea to issue notice to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram over the crackdown.

Senior counsel Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Ramdev, had referred to a press release issued by the Home Ministry and an interview by Chidambaram to Doordarshan in support of his contention that the decision to use force was taken much earlier. The court then posted the matter for hearing on July 25.

Common Wealth Scam: Suresh Kalmadi Suffering From Dementia

Suresh Kalmadi, the former Common Wealth Games Organising Committee chairman, lodged in Tihar jail in connection with the multi-crore CWG scam, is suffering from dementia, a disease related to memory loss, impaired reasoning and personality changes and this may have a bearing on his ongoing trial.

The 66-year-old MP from Pune was recently taken to Lok Narayan Jai Prakash Hospital where an MRI scan was conducted on him. The tests show that he was suffering from dementia which gradually affects cognitive functions of the person affected by it, Deputy Inspector General of Tihar R N Sharma said.

He said dementia at a preliminary stage was mentioned in the medical history submitted to Jail authorities by the family members. The MP was ailing much before he was arrested and brought to jail on the allegations of being involved in large scale corruption in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games, he said.

"We are still awaiting for a formal copy of the test conducted at the LNJP," he said. Legal experts feel that the impact of his health condition on the trial would be determined only after it was analysed properly by medical experts.

Kalmadi's lawyer Hitesh Jain said that his client had been suffering from this problem for last four to five years and the same had been communicated to the jail and investigating authorities. Noted lawyer K T S Tulsi said the first thing is that it needs to be established as to how long the under trial has been suffering from dementia.

Chevrolet Beat Diesel Launches Today

Today General Motors India launched its popular the diesel variant car 'Beat' for Rs. 4.29-5.45 lakh (ex-showroom) in New Delhi. GM India claimed that the car will deliver a mileage of 24 kilometers per litre.

GM's new launch comes amid a slowdown in car sales. Last month, domestic passenger car sales saw the slowest growth in 27 months, mainly due to hike in lending rates and rising fuel prices.

But that has not deterred GM from setting ambitious targets for Beat diesel. The company is eyeing a sale of 4,500 to 5,000 units of Beat diesel every month.

The company aims to sell 1,40,000 units in 2011. GM has also decided to expand the capacity at its Halol plant from 85,000 units to 1,10,000 units.

The company expects the demand to pick up in the festive season. It plans to showcase products from JV partner SAIC at the upcoming Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Mammootty and Mohanlal are under the scrutiny of Income Tax (I-T) sleuths, Malayalam superstar Dileep attended the tax department's 150th anniversary celebrations in Kochi as one of the chief guests.

Dileep sent the audience into ripples of laughter each time he referred to the raids against his co-superstars.

"The moment you people came to invite me, I asked my producer and director who was doing my latest film to go away because I have to be in this function," Dileep said while addressing the audience at the function Sunday night.

He said if the tax authorities ever wanted to interrogate him, all they had to do was give him a call.

"And if I don't come to you, please scare me by saying that you will now arrive at my house and I will be with you the very next moment," he said to a round of applause.

On film stars allegedly evading tax, he said: "Please don't see us trouble makers and as tax evaders. It is just that we are not good in numbers." Dileep is one of the leading individual tax payers in Kerala.

Venue for the Carlos Santana concert forced to change due to gale force winds, promoters NNG Promotions said yesterday. The concert will now be held at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali instead of the Granaries in Floriana.

Noida Extension Flat Buyers Expects that Allahabad High Court Admit its Applications on July 26

Noida Extension Flat Buyers Welfare Association, expecting that the Allahabad High Court will admit its applications on July 26 to become a party in the cases related to land acquisition in Greater Noida. Noida Extension Flat Buyers Welfare Association represents nearly 30,000 affected flat owners.

In two separate orders, the High Court has quashed the acquisition of about 750 hectares of land from farmers by the Greater Noida Development Industrial Authority (GNIDA), affecting more than 26,000 flat-owners and about 20 realty projects of developers, including Amrapali and Supertech.

Last week, the High Court had deferred till July 26 its hearing on a petition challenging the acquisition of more than 460 hectare of land in Noida Extension, part of Greater Noida. The court is likely to club other related petitions.

"We have filed 41 impleadment applications in Allahabad High Court urging that we must be given an opportunity to be heard before a decision is taken," Noida Extension Flat Buyers Welfare Association (NEFBWA) Treasurer Rahul Sharma said.

"We are hoping that court will admit our applications to become a party in the land acquisition cases between farmers and the authority," he added. In Noida Extension, an estimated 2.5 lakh houses are planned and out of that about one lakh units have already been sold by builders.

On July 6, the Supreme Court had upheld the Allahabad High Court's order to quash acquisition of 156 hectare of land from farmers in the Shahberi village of Greater Noida. Last week, the High Court passed another order quashing the acquisitions of 589.13 hectares of land acquired from the farmers.

Yesterday, hundreds of flat buyers under the banner of NEFBWA held a peace march in Noida to raise their concern over the land acquisition issue. "We want our flats at committed price. We do not want refund of the money," NEFBWA President R P Tyagi had said.

Antonio Bonfatti Wins the Santa Fe Governor Elections

Antonio Bonfatti, the Socialist candidate won the Santa Fe province gubernatorial elections, with 37.7 percent votes. He will replace Governor Hermes Binner. PRO party candidate Miguel Del Sel followed in a close second place, with 36 percent of votes, while Kirchnerite candidate Agustín Rossi stood in third place with 22.33 percent of votes.

Kirchnerite María Eugenia Bielsa was the most voted deputy. Likewise, the Progressive Front won key mayoral posts: Mónica Fein in Rosario and José Manuel Corral in Santa Fe City.

Despite the lack of official and complete results, the Progressive Front claimed victory and Miguel Del Sel appeared as the election’s surprise, winning over Agustín Rossi and coming in second place.

A ecstatic Miguel Del Sel said that “regardless of the election’s results, we feel like we are the true winners.” He was joined by PRO leader and mayor Mauricio Macri and several of the center-right party’s authorities. Indeed, polls had estimated that the comedian, who is making his debut in politics would be more than 10 points behind Bonfatti. The actual difference was of less than three percent.

Minutes after 9.30 pm, the Hermes Binner led force was the first party to make a statement after polls closed and said that Bonfatti had came in first place with 37.6 percent of votes, ahead of Del Sel and Rossi, on grounds of 230 “witness” polling stations.

More than 2.5 million people were available to vote on Sunday's elections. Seventy percent of registered voters casted their votes.

Russell Brand's Touching Tribute to Amy Winehouse

Russell Brand has written a touching tribute to soul singer Amy Winehouse, who was found dead over the weekend. British comedian and actor Brand took to his blog on Sunday to share his thoughts on Winehouse's passing.

In a post titled For Amy, Brand says he first met Winehouse on the Camden pub scene, and admits that at first he thought she was "just some twit in a pink satin jacket shuffling round bars". He says that only later, after Winehouse rose to fame, did he realise her undeniable talent.

"I've known Amy Winehouse for years. When I first met her around Camden she was just some twit in a pink satin jacket shuffling round bars with mutual friends, most of whom were in cool Indie bands or peripheral Camden figures Withnail-ing their way through life on impotent charisma," Brand writes.

Brand adds: "I was myself at that time barely out of rehab and was thirstily seeking less complicated women so I barely reflected on the now glaringly obvious fact that Winehouse and I shared an affliction, the disease of addiction."

Describing her as "sweet and peculiar but most of all vulnerable", Brand recalls watching Winehouse perform with Paul Weller at the Roundhouse in Camden. "I arrived late and as I made my way to the audience through the plastic smiles and plastic cups I heard the rolling, wondrous resonance of a female vocal," he recalls.

"Entering the space I saw Amy on stage with Weller and his band; and then the awe. The awe that envelops when witnessing a genius. From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie and Ella, from the font of all greatness," Brand writes. "A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine.

"My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened. Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse! That twerp, all eyeliner and lager...the lips that I'd only seen clenching a fishwife fag and dribbling curses now a portal for this holy sound. So now I knew. She wasn't just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a f**king genius."

Brand also describes how Winehouse "became defined by her addiction", and blamed the media for being "more interested in tragedy than talent, so the ink began to defect from praising her gift to chronicling her downfall."

The Arthur star, who detailed in his memoir, My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs, and Stand-Up, how he struggled with heroin addiction for many years, says he was also 27 when he sought treatment to kick the habit.

"Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death...Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease.

Not all addicts have Amy's incredible talent. Or Kurt's or Jimi's or Janis's, some people just get the affliction." He concludes: "Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call."

Amy Winehouse Death: She Bought Cocktail Including Ketamine in Hours Before Death

After the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, more details of the death come out. She bought substances, believed to be cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and ketamine in the hours before her death. She was also believed to have been drinking heavily on Friday night. The purchase of the "cocktail" was said to be around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, in Camden.

The source said, "'Amy Winehouse seemed determined to have a big one on Friday night. She was out in Camden on Friday evening, but seemed determined to carry on the party back at her flat. None of us know who was with her into the early hours of Saturday. But getting out of it was clearly her main priority of the night."

A post-mortem has been scheduled in the next few days in an effort to determine the exact cause of death. It was just a few days before that a report from the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs stated that the number of people using the drug ketamine had increased significantly over the last decade in the U.K., as its price fell. Surveys taken in 2009 found some 68 percent of U.K. club-goers had taken ketamine. In 2001 that number was 25 percent.

Extended ketamine use can cause bladder problems (symptoms reported by users included an increased need to urinate, passing blood in urine, leakage of urine and pain on urination) as well as kidney and liver damage. Chronic use of ketamine may also lead to cognitive impairment, including memory problems.

However, ketamine is classified as a Class C controlled substance, which is the lowest category in the U.K. Meanwhile, ecstasy is a Class A substance, and even cannabis is a Class B substance. The report stated that it was possible that the classification may have wrongly suggested that the drug was less dangerous than other substances.

Ketamine is a human and animal tranquilizer. It is sold in either powdered or liquid form. In its powdered form it can be inhaled, injected, or taken orally (although it also works as a laxative when ingested). 12 Kidnapped Migrants Rescued by Police in Mexico

Police Officers rescued at least 12 migrants, including two women, who were kidnapped two months ago in the North Eastern Mexican state Tamaulipas.

The migrants - eight Central Americans, three Brazilians and an Iranian - were found at a house in Reynosa city across the border from McAllen, Texas, the Public Safety Secretariat said.

The two women and 10 men were taken from Chiapas state on the border with Guatemala.
The migrants told police that the kidnappers "beat them severely".

Thousands of migrants, both Mexicans and foreigners, try to enter the US each year via land routes from Mexico.

An estimated 300,000 Central Americans and 400,000 Mexicans undertake the dangerous journey across Mexico each year on their way to the US.

Entourage Season Eight Premiere: Review

"Entourage" began its eighth and final season “Up in Smoke" with a bang Sunday night.
After all, most of the characters’ lives are going up in flames. The episode finds the boys from Queens falling on some hard times, as Vince was released from court-ordered rehab to avoid hard time. So much for his image, Shauna.

Eric and Sloan are (gasp!) no longer engaged, after her failed attempt to get E to sign a pre-nup resulted in him packing his (tiny) stuff and moving out. Even though E is running his own management firm with Scott, he can’t seem to enjoy it without his uber-hot woman at his side... especially since she sent him back his engagement ring in a manila envelope. Unpadded, no less. The b*tch.

E may be single, but it doesn’t look like Sloan will be for long, not with half of Hollywood trying to, ahem, charm her in E’s absence. First in line? Johnny Galecki, who will be appearing as himself this season and trying to give new meaning to the words “Big Bang Theory."

Another relationship on the rocks is Ari and Mrs. Ari. They are undergoing a trial separation, or, as Lloyd put, it “S-e-p-a-r-a-t-i-o-n.” But if Mrs. Ari has anything to say about it, it sounds like this may not be so temporary. It almost seemed like garden variety fighting between the Golds until she dropped the bomb that she’s seeing someone else. Whoa. Ari can be an ass, but you have to feel badly for him.

To make matters worse, Ari’s son, Jonah, has been faking illness and playing hooky from school just to spend some time with his dad. The best line of the episode comes from Ari, speaking to Lloyd: “Don’t ever spell in front of my son again. He’s s-m-a-r-t-e-r than you.” So, Ari chooses to drown his sorrows in some drinks at Vince’s welcome home party. Too bad there aren’t any adult beverages around. Johnny Drama has made sure of that.

To prepare for Vince’s return, Drama and Turtle have performed a sweep of the whole house to remove any contraband that may derail Vince’s sobriety. Not having his coke-fiend porn star girlfriend around is a step in the right direction.

Vince delivers the gag-worthy line to end all gag-worthy lines when he deflects rehab groupie’s "you’re sexy" compliment with, “no, sober is sexy.” Blech. Then he spends the rest of the episode babbling about some Romanian-miner-meets-Marley-and-Me movie he wants to make, and no one initially has the guts to tell him the idea sucks. So, let me get this straight:

Rehab made him cheesy and caused him to have bad taste in films? Boo! We want the old Vince back (minus the narcotics). Good thing Billy and the crew eventually tell him the truth about his pitch, and Billy brings a bus full of substance-free hotties over to welcome Vince home. It’s only after watching Vince’s all-male entourage tip toe around him the whole episode like awkward yes-men robots that they finally confront the elephant in the room. Vince won’t fall off the wagon. He promises.

Actually, he says: “None of this is real and none of you are being real, because I’m fine,” but close enough. Hopefully, Vince can stay sober long enough to reclaim his role in Air Walkers, or at least long enough to find all of them a new place to live. Nice job, Turtle, burning the house down while hiding in the laundry room smoking a joint. See what having a substance free house will get you? Tsk, tsk.

At least Turtle’s tequila business is doing well, as is Drama’s new show, Johnny Bananas. With any luck, the rest of Team Chase will get their acts together soon. Because even though the plot line was interesting this time around, the dialogue wasn’t, and the acting was, at times, painful. Because this is the final season, Mark Wahlberg and the boys better step up their game with what few episodes they have left. Here’s hoping things turn around next week.

Ra-One: Final Days of Shooting, Tons of Excitement on Set

Shah Rukh Khan starring science-fiction film Ra-One is in its final stage. Red Chillies team along with director Anubhav Sinha, have been working day and night to complete Ra.One. Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal are also in this film. With the final days of shooting commencing, there is tons of excitement on set.

Filmfare correspondent Ashwini Deshmukh was lucky enough to be on the sets during filming and in her excitement could not stop herself from tweeting the latest scoop. SRK being the showman that he is was swinging and twirling in mid-air for his various stunt performances, as the crowds of people watching held their breath.

Risky business our superstars have to indulge in! Shah Rukh was also seen in a completely different costume from his regular G.One outfit seen on the promotional posters. Hmm, interesting. Wonder what the new look is all about?

Ashwini shared that SRK has an amazing amount of knowledge when brainstorming with director Anubhav Sinha and his team about each forthcoming shot they need to take. SRK advised the team in regards to high-end appliances, gadgets and software that are to be used for shots.

Not only does he have loads of knowledge, but he has some wonderful friends. He thanked Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra for doing cameos in Ra.One. “3 days of hectic shoot…last 4 days to go. My heartfelt thanks to Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra for being so wonderful on the sets. Bless you.” And as if that wasn’t thanks enough, he even gifted Sanjay a Ducati bike and Priyanka an acoustic guitar!

Tarun Mansukhani of Dostana directing fame assisted in directing Ra.One. Tarun wanted a break from scripted and was interested in gaining experience working on an action flick. Ra.One director Anubhav Sinha graciously accepted Tarun’s offer to assist when he found out he was interested.

Tarun was so excited he tweeted “This time I’m gonna get the stunt team to put me on a rig! I wanna know what its like to flyyyyy like a super hero!” Do we sense a passion for action and adventure?

And the talk of B-Town is the fabulous metallic grey bike G.One rides in certain scenes of the film. As SRK tweeted, it was a “cool futuristic bike” used for a thrilling action sequence. We look forward to seeing it on the big screen!

And of course, the notoriously late Shah Rukh Khan tweeted that he was late arriving to set and that the team of the film is “too patient” with him. He concluded with SRK brand humour, signing off with “have to work before they fire me from the job”. As if there could be a Ra.One without its G.One!

But nothing melted our hearts like this tweet from SRK. “Surrounded by blue cloth. doing jumps not to prove I am a hero but cos I believe i can fly…I believe cos all of you make me believe that.” Too sweet, na?

With Anubhav Sinha tweeting “Another set wrapped today. Moving on to the last set the day after. Been busy, will write in detail after final wrap.” we are certain that fan excitement has shifted into high gear.

England Vs India: Gautam Gambhir Should be Fit to Bat

The final day of the first Test against England,Indian opener Gautam Gambhir should be fit to bat if required, team manager Anirudh Chowdhary declared at the end of the penultimate day's play at Lord's on Sunday.

Dharmendra Joins the Reality Show India’s Got Talent

Dharmendra, the Veteran bollywood actor, at the age of 75 will make his debut on the small screen as one of the judges of the reality show India’s Got Talent along with fellow judges Sonali Bendre and Kirron Kher.

Norway suspect Anders Behring Breivik was nearly caught preparing bombs for his massacre just last month - and was ready to murder the unsuspecting woman who was about to discover his deadly secret, according to excerpts of his manifesto.

In his 1518-page online mission statement, the right-wing extremist behind Friday's bomb and gun rampage told how in April he leased a farm three hours north of Oslo, from a man who was going to jail.

He established a bogus agricultural company, which allowed him to obtain fertiliser, and moved to the farm to begin building explosives.

"The last week in the capital I spent a lot of time with friends, partying and attending various social events. I knew that it would be the last chance, for a very long time, I would enjoy their presence," he wrote, in excerpts published by The (London) Times.
